clutch question
I just installed new clutch in my 69 chevy 305 with saginaw 3-speed. However, when i put it in gear and push in the clutch the truck still doesn't move. it's acting like the it is still in gear (or rather the clutch is still engaged). I tightened the linkage and am getting good pressure on the pedal. it is a mechanical system (not hydraulic). With the pedal not pressed the throw out bearing is flush up against flywheel. Then i press the pedal and get good movement. I installed clutch disk correctly. torqued flywheel.
Is there something different with the saginaw 3-speed? i thought if i am in gear and push the clutch the truck should roll. I just want to make sure it is working right. I can't start the engine cause i just did an overhaul and havent got everything hookd up This happened last time a changed a clutch out in my 88 GMC 4X4. wierd Last edited by adametree; 03-13-2011 at 10:30 PM. |

Re: clutch question
yea. i looked at throw out bearing hit the flex pushed while someone pushed in clutch. it definetly flexed the flex plate. how far in does it need to go to release clutch?

Re: clutch question
There's no set distance since every installation is different depending on manufacturer. Should be enough to release the clutch, though.

Re: clutch question
Yes you should be able to roll the truck with it in gear & the clutch in but it will roll kind of hard especially with a new clutch that has not been started yet. Did you use 3rd gear? It would work better then a lower gear. A better test would be to remove the lower cover, get under the truck & have someone step on the clutch or prop it down. The pressure plate should move away from the disc & you should be able to move the disc with a screwdriver. (trans. in neutral)

What did you do to fix the problem on the 88? If all you did was replace the clutch and no other changes, the throw out bearing shouldn't be the problem. If the truck moves when in neutral, than there's definitely something not right from there forward. Defective pressure plate (I've encountered that one or twice), transmission input shaft binding, wrong clutch disc or installed backwards. |
