64 Build "The Titanic"

Hello all. New to the forum. My name is Marshall, this is my first build so I thought I would share with you all what ive been working on for the past year. Going a little different rout then the most. Let me know what you guys think.

Picked the truck up from a guy in the dallas area. He decided he was goin to try and restore it, but didnt get very far.





Time to start tearing her down.



Had the frame powdercoated


5 lug swap to run disk brakes, 2.5 drops spindles and a set of 2 in drop springs.


Got a set of 3in drop trail arms from Nate at Portorbuilt, along with a Bolt in notch. Frame is sitting on 5in drop springs.


I decided i didnt want to drill 20 some odd holes through my frame so i welded it up instead.





As for the motor. Kept the stock sixer.





And now here are some pictures of my cab and bed. I wanted to truck to look as though it had been sitting in the Texas sun for over a hundred years. I blasted the entire truck and let it rust. A bit crazy I know but its what I wanted and it turned out great!

I shot the firewall with an epoxy primer. the inners as well. Going for a clean engine bay.

Dosent it! I've got a really cool GMC grill that im going to run and was thinking i was going to have to find a tailgate to match, but there is no way i'm giving that one up. You can hardly see the chevy anyway!

Thats what i was thinking. Have you heard of anyone shooting over rust though. I wonder how it will turn out?

Yea eventually. The rear ended up being lower then planned. I sorta stumbled upon the trail arms. Guy I knew through a friend needed to get rid of them and my stocks were a bit trashed. There 3in drops and I already had the 5in springs. That put the frame on the axle. The notch added about three inches of clearance but the bed and fuel tank aren't on yet. The set up may not work. We will see

That looks like a solid cab you started with, seems a shame to waiste such a good platform when the rest of us are trying to get rid of all the rust. LOL

Haha I know it and for that I apologize. Its only a little bit of surface rust and to ease your minds a bit, the truck will forever have a spot indoors.

I like the looks that you are creating on your truck. I know that everyone won't like it, but it is yours and that makes it okay. Anyway, I would try to clear it and see if it works (try a small inconspicuous spot and see what it looks like and then decide). Keep it up.

Yeah you gotta do something to arrest the oxidization of the metal or within 5 years or so it wont be safe to drive.
Upstate New England cars have it so bad because they salt the roads up there horribly, you can literally put your finger thru the floor pans and fenders of mid 80s cars. Anything older than that up there has pretty much rusted into the ground....

Interesting approach to the look though, gotta admire a man who knows what he wants !!

Keep us in pics, this will be a rig worth looking at.

Hey Guys, Been a while but i have been working on the truck lately. I have changed direction a few times but I am super motivated to get this thing finished. Here are some update pictures.

I got the truck to this point and really did nothing afterwards.



I lost motivation as summer hit and just threw the body on the frame and let it sit.

As winter came along I decided I did not what to proceed with the Inline 230 and 3 speed combination.

I remembered we had been storing and old Studebaker for a friend of ours, It had been sitting in a 53ft trailer for 4 or 5 years and i knew it had a GM crate 350 and a th350 in it. I made a quick phone call and surprisingly he only wanted 200 bucks for the motor and transmission.


Got her cleaned up.

Had the tranny Rebuilt


But Unfortunately lost interest again. The biggest hurdle for me is always wiring up an engine. I have never done it before and hitting that wall really brings my progress to a halt. That's twice now.

Well, Instead of climbing that said "wall" I decided to just go around it. I still don't know how to wire a gasoline engine, But i do currently have a running engine between my frame rails.

Enters the 3.7 Hurcules Turbo Diesel.


This engine was a repower for an chevy bread van that originally had the Chevy 6.5 Diesel engine. This is very smiler to the Cummins 4bt. HP and Tq numbers are almost identical and they share the very common Bosch VE injection Pump. Big plus for me, ONE wire and this thing is running.

I have really always wanted to put a diesel in this thing but never pulled the trigger. The Cummins were just to expensive. A running engine with no adapter plate and no tranny generally cost at least double what I paid, and i got both the Engine and transmission. The transmission is the SM465.

Ive got the cab back off for now. Had a drive shaft built last week. Had to fab up and relocate the transmemeber. Working on a custom Z-Bar. Converted the truck to run a throttle cable vs the stock linkage. Brake lines 80% done. Need to fab up a new radiator bracket to make room for the intercooler. Need to run fuel lines. I am planning on using an old beer keg for the tank. Well see about that though. Lots to do, but super motivated

ziplock can you put up some pics of the throttle cable set inside the cab? and what i think you mean by "inner-cooler" is really a air to air heat exchanger i was looking at the engine pics and was wondering if you got the air to air with it then i seen what you said about the rad ...looks like it will be a sweet ride when she's done

Update;

Motor and transmission are officially in place, fuel lines and brake lines are run, cab is on hopefully for good. I am hopping to get everything buttoned up for a test run in the next couple of weeks. Ive got to get my clutch linkage and throttle finished up. Get something fabed up to accept the radiator plus an intercooler, and bleed the brakes. In the bellow video you notice the fuel tank is sitting on blocks. It is all bolted down like this temporarily, because I am worried about rear end. The motor tops out at 1900 rpm, Ive got a 4 speed granny tranny and 3.73 gears. I fear the trucks top speed 50 tops. But who knows. Here are some pictures for you enjoyment.
