Ut Oh......
Ohhh man my heart sank when I found this today
Notice anything a little strainge here,,,, (big picts for the detail) http://www.small-block-chevy.com/ima...2010/UtOh1.jpg how about here...... http://www.small-block-chevy.com/images/662010/UtOh.jpg heres a hint.. look what is laying in the back corner of the air pan http://www.small-block-chevy.com/ima...2010/UtOh3.jpg Look close other squirter is wedged in the venturi of the rear carb,,, bu NO screws!!!!!!!!!!!! and no where for them to go but into the motor. ![]() I heard a short knock knock knock as I made the turn onto the turnout road at the last race but it went away and the motor ran fine (10.9x all 119all night) figured just a lifter climbing the adjacent lobe or something. Checked the cam end play last weekend and the Hex-sajust bolts,, no problem. So NOW I think I found th esource ![]() Got all the plugs out and #2 and #5 show hint of damage bit not all beat up. Ordering a borescope to decide what to do here. If the new Dart Littel M block is beat up,, I gotta get busy and get teh chassis cert and the trans cert and a bunch of crap up to date on the Nova!!! Man this is NOT what I needed right now!

Re: Ut Oh......
I feel for ya Marv!!
A buddies Fox Body did something similar with a throttle body screw. Very little damage when the head came off. I have been pulling my TB blades out of my TB to drill for more air at idle. Everything I put them in I think about the Fox Mustang. Once I get idle airflow where it needs to be, out with the lock tight.

Re: Ut Oh......
any time when metal and metal gets pounded something gotta give ,i drop a small hose clamp down a 454 when removing the intake ,and i didnt see that the clamp fell down the head, until it started to make noise ,tore it down and found the clamp beat into the piston and one valve was crack
good luck

Re: Ut Oh......
Sucks... Whow knows you may not be in much trouble at all.. I have seen some pretty large items go through an engine and never do any real damage A few dings on the comp chamber and piston dome and whoosh they are out the ex system..
Hope it works out that its just minor.. Marv I have a killer bore scope, want me to ship it to you??? no issues brother.. super small probe that you can bend around in a 180 to look at the top or the chamber..

Re: Ut Oh......
Thanks guys. Bore inspection scope on it's way.The cheep ones are not much more than the gaskets to open it up and take a look-see. If it hadn't ran only 0.02 slower after I heard the knock knock,,, I'd be more anal about it. I'm sure a couple of pistons are marred up, as is the head (it's a zero decked motor like that would make much difference). But if there is no screws embedded in a piston, or damage that would pinch a ring against the bore,, and leakdown doesn't show something ugly.... well lots of "if's"
I only have 3 more ADRA races this year (Sept, Oct, Nov) . If it hints of being seriosly wounded,, I guess it's inspiration to get busy with the Nova certs for the last 3 races. and to all our boys serving wherever you are,, HAPPY 4th of July guys. THANKS!!!

Re: Ut Oh......
Marv,
I feel for you. I believe you fall under this old saying if it wasn't from bad luck you wouldn't have any luck at all. I wish you the best on your inspection.

Marv,
You got me thinking that I need to add carburetor hardware to my between race check list. Ouch!! Hope it all turns out to be minor. Paul

Re: Ut Oh......
Yup,, this motor has been bad luck that's for sure.. It's been through 2 vehicles and both have been a serious money pit!!! I should have known when it came off the dyno at 666HP that it was going to be TROUBLE!!!

Can I ask you Marv what you use for a rear gear? We have a fairly similar power and weight, just curious. I'd like to do some test and tune in a few weeks. I have a 3.89 in it as of today (street gear) also have a 4.56 setup. I use a 29 inch tire. Sorry to hack your thread. |

Re: Ut Oh......
Marv, you should have taken a few degrees of timing out out it on the dyno just to teach it who's boss, and that you wount stand for such a thing. But I am afraid it is too late. You have let the possesed motor live on the way it wants to. Now you unfortunately are paying the price

Re: Ut Oh......
Welp, bore-scope here,,,, #5 and #4 wounded. 30% leak on #5 and looks to have taken a hit out on the edge of the piston. Can't see if the wall of the bore is hurt or not.
SO she's coming apart this weekend. ![]() The heads aren't leaking , just a 1/2 a dozen whacks in the quench on #5 and one in #4. Looking around for a head that uses the .10/.45 offset like the 220's and decide if were going to upgrade, or weld em up, mill them down and run em. Truck was really fast enough (If there is such a thing) So , that's that story!!!
