Simulated bed wood

I hope this doesnt get me kicked out of the club! I went w Trex decking for my 70 stepper. I love wood, and I couldn't stand the heartache of watching the Texas sun destroy a fine wood bed. So here it is.

Re: Simulated bed wood

Looks good to me! I've considered using some for a future build... Did you have to add an extra strip or two to make up for the difference in the board widths or did it work out? I can't tell but all the widths look identical until it gets to the sides which is different than the factory...

Re: Simulated bed wood

yup--paid the dumb tax on that one. Yes had to add an extra strip...+ shipping. All the boards are same width for the decking...5 1/2". If I had it to do over (and had the extra dollars--these were left over from a decking job) I'd use the Trex or Veranda facia. The width for fascia is 7 1/2" or 12" so you could mill it to the exact widths of the original boards. There are lots of interesting color choices, though they get pricey if special ordered. Live & Learn.

Re: Simulated bed wood

Yep...live and learn...I know that well

So did you have to re-drill holes for the strips to mount to the cross-sills?

Re: Simulated bed wood

No, used the existing pre punched strips. I did have to re-drill the holes in the sills and use a slightly longer carriage bolt as the Trex is 7/8" thick. Even w all that the bed angle holes lined up perfectly with the existing end holes of the sills.

Re: Simulated bed wood

That's what I was speaking of (the cross-sills) Looks good and is a great option also if you plan to use the truck as a truck w/out having to maintain the bed wood. Just spray it out when done....I've considered looking for a black engineered (I think I've seen that on here in fact) and have some steel strips bedlined black to look somewhat factory (some where painted black and some body color from what I've seen)

As best I can tell, the Trex decking isn't. It's color impregnated to about an 1/8"

Re: Simulated bed wood

Very tempting idea. How is it holding up so far? Sometimes these artificial deck materials get chalky.

Re: Simulated bed wood

so far so good. looks like the day I installed it...and I've worked the hell out of it. Very pleased. There are different finishes/colors available. I saw where Home Depot had a sale on it last week. I'll wash it out and take some pics so you can get an idea as to how it lasts.

Re: Simulated bed wood

I used the facia boards on Linsey (my daughters truck). It's skinnier than the decking but it really needed another support if you were gonna use it very much to haul stuff. I cut the groves on my table saw but be careful to keep it against the fence or it will be wavy down the cutline. I have a piece that I had to cut up and use as dunnage for my camper supports. Lol
If you wanted to uses the thicker deck boards you could always router out the area above the cross members to lower the deck height in those areas.

The guy I sold her to drives it every day but doesn't haul much in it.
Here's a pic.

X2. You beat me to it. Fascia boards aren't as thick as the decking boards. Nice job on the bed. It looks awesome!

Re: Simulated bed wood

I have been thinking of doing the same thing, since my pine isn't holding up as well as I thought it would. The trex fascia is 3/4" thick (same as original bedwood) and 7 1/4" wide (original widest board is 7 7/16" wide). It could easily be cut to fit as original. Lowes sells another brand of composite decking which is cheaper called Choicedek. I am glad to see someone posted their review and pics. Thanks.
