Fan hits shroud?
I have a 71 chevy c-10 307.
Does anyone have any idea why lately my fan is scraping on the bottom of my fan shroud ? The radiator or shroud hasn't moved but the fan has about 2 inches clearance at the top and 1/8 inch at the bottom. I have no Idea. |

Sounds like a broken motor mount or trans. mount to me. Something has moved....

Check your water pump to see if the bearing is going bad. That would cause the fan to drop down and hit the shroud. Just a guess.

I've got my dads 71 cheyenne C20 right now with 350/350, all stock motor. He had it parked for a while and when he fired it up again it did same thing. With motor off its hard to see where it rubs. Checked motor mounts, water pump, the works and nothing wrong there. If you push down on top of shroud at middle top when its idling it shuts up. Drive it down the road for a while and it often quiets down. Fired it up after sitting for couple of weeks the other day and it didn't do it. I'm starting to think its the shape of the shroud (that has warped) and depending on temperature etc it changes shape. I bought a good used one (one of many great transactions with a board member by-th-way)and I'm going to change it out with new one and try that.

I had the same problem on my 72. The bottom of the fan shroud was sitting in some clips at the bottom that didn't hold it very well. When I had the motor out I noticed that their were holes in the bottom of the radiator support that lined up with holes in the fan shroud. Went to NAPA and bought some of those clip nut things and bolted the bottom of the shroud on and now the hole for the fan is equal all the way around

Thanks-- Tried the motor mounts and looked at those clips at the bottom. There in there good. It must be that the shroud is warped this truck has been setting too.
Thanks |
