Hood doesn't latch 58-59
I did some searching but didn't really come up with an answer. I have an original latch and plate in my hood but having trouble getting the hood to latch. Safety catch is good but it doesn't always catch to stay down. What are some things to look for? It kind of looks like there's a groove worn into the primary catch. I tried a another plate from a spare hood, seemed better for awhile but problem is back. My latch still has the spring and it seems to work correctly. Almost like I can't get the hood down far enough to catch all the time. Should I shim the plate some?

Is the hood setting all the way down on the rubber bumpers and even with the fenders and aligned with the headlight line? Does the back set down correctly in line with the cowl? photo might show something obvious.

Yep - hood sitting down on the bumpers in front and on the sides at the fenders. Gaps at fenders are equal and just right. Back sets down on the cowl. I'll try to get a couple photos.
One thing I noticed at a car show this weekend is I saw a restored truck that had really thin bumpers on the grill surround where the hood comes down. Maybe 1/8th of an inch or slightly more. Mine are more like 3/8 thick. What is correct? Removing the bumpers had no effect though. |

I had the same issue. Changed the mechanism and all is good now. Easy and not expensive
