Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels

Well I was super happy that I was able to finish my bench seat yesterday. So I decided to glue on the 1970 style door vinyl to the metal door panel. I thought I had chosen the right glue but obviously not. I used 3M 77 but it never stopped being sticky and did not hold the vinyl very good. Notice in the photo how it is falling off the steel door panel. I did a search on forums but could find a specific name of glue that others have used.

What does everyone else use. I'm looking at 3M 90, 3M Headliner and panel adhesive, or woodweld contact cement. Also now I need to clean off the 77!

That is one of the better jobs I've seen on a seat cover. Where did you source it?

Carsinc is where I got the cover. Bought new cheaper foams from either jegs or summit. The cover used NOS cloth and was not cheap but is well put together. Probably took them 6 weeks to make. Took me couple hours to put together.

I used contact cement to glue leather material to abs door panels on a street rod I built a few years ago. Worked great. bought it at home depot.

I think a spray adhesive works best. Goes on thinner and even, tacks right up and dries quicker. I assumed you meant the 3M 77 in a tube

I'm usually over on the 73-87 side of the forum, but I was just nosing around. I have a bit of a thing for seats and saw yours, very nice!!
So anyways, I have used this stuff. I do headliners from time to time, and it works great. And I use it for other projects. I have a couple of cans of the 3M 77, but I always use this. I'm not too impressed with the 3M 77.

This is what the Performance Adhesive says, it can be used for what you are wanting:

Performance High Temperature Headliner Adhesive has a long open time, a very consistent spray pattern that yield great coverage with professional results. I also use this a lot, but more for the foam repair on my seats. It is definitely good stuff for foam and it can be used for what your wanting.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll check out the links. I used the spray version of 3M 77. I'm sure it is good when used for the right application. After sitting for a few days I can easily peel off the vinyl. Also it will not hold the wrapped edges down. I need something that immediately bonds and that can hold the stretched vinyl. The other kicker is I live in AZ and in the summer the inside of vehicles bake everything.

That's what I didn't like about the 3M 77, I just never seemed to dry. The headliner spray does!! Almost too fast. It always makes me nervous doing headliners, if I have to reposition, I better do it fast!!

Did you let it tack up first before sticking it?
Depending on humidity, temp etc it may take longer but usually a few minutes will do.
When you spray both surfaces let it dry a bit until it's not wet to the touch.
I'm assuming you sprayed both surfaces?
I've never used the aresol but same principal as contact we used for cabinet/counter lamination.

Subscribed. I have new metal panels I was thinking of adding vinyl (or leather) to. I live in Bakersfield, CA and it's 104 Today so the adhesive has to stand up to high constant heat.

Looking forward to results with proper adhesive.

After some googling, it looks like 3M 80 adhesive might work. $15 at Home Depot.

Looked at the 3M 80 spray and one problem I could see is the set time is 60 minutes. One of the problems I am having is getting the vinyl to wrap around the edge of the panel and being able to be stretched and stick without pulling off after a few minutes.

hope you find one that works.i have tried three different brands including 3m and none of them dry up and hold.they stay sticky and will not work on the edges.

Hmmm, I have never done upholstery myself, but I noticed the 60min dry time also. I was thinking of possibly doing it in 2 steps? Do the flat/main part, wait for it to fully cure. Then do the wraparound spraying the edges and back of panel??

I have some extra vinyl from old seat cover and extra sheet metal that I'll test before I try to glue again. I'll buy some of the glues recommended here and will post what I find.

I used 77 spray on my vinyl and it didn't hold, contact cement by brush is my next try.

I saw the Amazon thing too and was wondering if it was legit. I think it may be a different product than the photos. If you mouse over the "3 Cans $43.95" then the photo changes to "Headliner Magic". May be a bait and switch. All that said, I went to buy the Hi Temp stuff and after shipping it came out to over $30.
