Re: why the difference
From what I've been told the solid one was the 1st design and they went with the multi-piece one to help dampen vibrations through the shifter and give it a bit of a buffer from people being too forceful with shifts and munching gears.

Re: why the difference
Great timing on this question, I was just wondering the same thing. Are both of these styles correct for the SM420? Anybody know if the change was made by date or application (C10 vs C30 or K vs C truck etc).
Any chance of a picture showing the entire sticks side by side? Thanks for info Tom

Seems to be something going on for 1965.

Re: why the difference
Took a picture course it doesn't load. Parts Book states first jobs 1 piece construction less sleeve. After jobs welded construction with sleeve.
part number 3665527 60-62. 3822568 63-64 Same part number as 63-64 for first jobs 65 3860941 65 After Jobs There are illustrations for a 60-62 4spd transmission and also 63-66. So there must be a difference as well between the two.

Re: why the difference
There is actually another later version during the square body era.
The sleeve version shown here has a square feature that fits in the base with rubber molded between the two. A later version is round internally and has 2 “O” rings to provide the isolation. K
