Not sure how many of you know this but I have been on the board since the 80's and I just found out about this part last week for our model trucks.

You can buy a brand new board to fix your factory tachometer if you have one.
They are 59.00 and have life time warranty. I just finished rebuilding mine and hooked it up to the Ramp truck to test it.
I snipped the 2 wires off of their connectors and re soldered them and it works great. You have to unsolder the 3 legs out of the old tach also. This was the hardest part for me. But once I had them out it was nothing to it.
I hate to admit it but I have thrown away 2 of these before because they quite working.

The board is also available for 6 cylinder engines too, & they make them for a lot of other vehicles.

do they work well with hei ? I have herd the factory units can sometimes be troublesome . maybe these are better?

Both of them worked last night on the Ramp truck with HEI. I just hooked them up and ran a jumper wire ground to verify. But they both did work. I got some more work to do on the speed warning parts before I take the cluster back out of the Ramp to install it though.

Well I took the speedometer a part to fix the screw that broke off in the face plate. I hope it all works when I re-install it tomorrow. I put the Brother's new Tach in also.
I made my own pass through the tin for the ground wire also.

Since I don't have a factory tach to begin with, ...I was looking at the kit on Brother's site yesterday.


Curious if you're running a stock coil, or perhaps a Pertronix? ...as I'm wondering about running a tach with Pertronix (FlameThrower II) installed. My understanding is that a resistor/cap? may be needed.

I was looking at the 5,000RPM tach. It looks like you are looking at the 8K tach.

Pertronix II coil, no tach problems. Only the Pertronix III's multispark signal interferes with tach feed.

I just bought another full 7 hole cluster with Tach for $175.00! It's original out of the guy's truck. Why I bought it I have no idea but I figured it's better than buying TP!

You asked if the Pertronix Ignitors/Flamethrower coils needed a resistor, or stock resistor wire? Negative. Like an HEI you want to feed the Positive side of the coil with a full time, full 12VDC. No resistor.

My Auto Sun [by AutoMeter] tach has outlasted my points system, my Pertronix II, and is currently running on a ''1976'' -vintage GM HEI w/ separate coil. A friend of mine with a '72 F-250 w/BBF 429 put a Pertronix III on his engine. Tach no go. He called Pertronix's customer service tech line. The guy said to switch back to a P-II if he wanted a tach. Or get a mechanical, like in 'Vettes. He still has no tach.

I run the Mallory version of the Electronic Ignition conversion. My factory tach is REAL close to spot on (Verified with my Digital Multi Meter) I’ve had it in the truck for 20 years now, and it’s never given me any problems.
Mind you, all the stuff under my hood is equivalent to what it left the factory with in 1970, although I did “Warm up the engine” a little when I rebuilt it in 1998.

I had a neighbor come by the other day in his 70ish Camaro. He had a box on it also from the HEI. It was hooked to the Tach connector on the HEI.
Could he not put a double connector at the HEI and run the tach and the box??? I have no idea if it would work but it may be worth a try.

I wouldn't think so. The wheel I have is about the same diameter as a stock wheel.

The 67-68s are 16.5'' in dia., the 69-72s are 17''.

You also can adjust the light out more if you like. I didn't want it sticking out past the mirror though. It can be shoved out more to get the handle further away from the wheel. The tilt wheel helps also.

FYI - Just so everyone knows, the board Andy purchased is for OEM stock Tachometers, not the aftermarket tachometers. The circuit boards are totally different.

I ordered the board, and when it arrived I realized I had a reproduction tach, not OEM. I contacted Cajun Tach Shop, and Greg was very helpful.

There is good news....he just came out with a replacement board for the reproduction tachs.

The reproduction tachs have had issues over the years of burning out after a few months. The reason is the heat on a particular resistor. You can replace the resistor, but it will eventually overheat again, and burn out. Bad design.

Greg's has designed his replacement board for the reproduction tachs to fix this issue.

Anyway, just wanted to get that out there for those with reproduction tachs.

If you have a reproduction tach be sure to let him know.
