1967 core support bracket mod to fit PS box - Pics?
Can anyone post a picture of how much they cut off their core support bracket to fit their power steering box? Ive done a few searches but have not come up with a good pic of the bracket itself.
Power steering conversion requires me to trim some of the bracket away for the PS box to fit. It looks like I would need to remove most/all of that lip on the edge, which gives the piece a lot of support. Debating on cutting off rivets to remove the core support bracket for modification. That way I can reinforce it assuming I do have to remove the lip. A good picture would help me solidify a decision. Thanks

No core support modification should be necessary for a power steering install. None that I recall

I will be headed back out to the shop in a while. I will see what I have. I thought there was just a half moon bent up in that area for clearance.... LockDoc

I looked at my trucks and did not see any interference with the core support. Just the inner fender notched out. I have about 1/2-3/4'' room around the mount

no cutting of core support or any bracket. I just trimmed inner fender for clearance access. 72 C10

67 has different core support brackets.

Re: 1967 core support bracket mod to fit PS box - Pics?
On my 67 frame (that I no longer own, putting my 67 stuff on a 72 frame, thankfully!!!) the core support FRAME bracket needed a little chopped off the back to clear a 68-up power steering gear box (this would NOT have been needed on a 67 because of its old timey hydraulic ram steering assist setup).

Here is what I notched on the 67 Panel Truck with a '73 box in it. It isn't hitting but I could have trimmed the corner off a little bit more. Second & third picture is an extra '67 frame and cab I have. It had a later steering box bolted in it but I don't know if the truck was ever on the road or not.... They actually cut the frame notch back a lot farther than they needed to. LockDoc

Re: 1967 core support bracket mod to fit PS box - Pics?
Thanks everyone. With 1/4" spacers made up, it fits right in with a little trimming of the core support. Just shy of an 1/8" gap between the frame and the round housing of the steering box.

Something new for me as I've apparently never come across this. I have had to use spacers b'cuz of the non-dimple frame however.

I purchased the readhead 2856 (3 Turns): 1980-1991 (for o ring stile fittings to match ls pump side). Which is a 4 bolt direct fit up to a 67 c20 frame. For reference the bolt patterns are the same at least up to 70 that I have physically confirmed. Some manual boxes are only three bolt but again the pattern is the same. 7/16" bolts.

Re: 1967 core support bracket mod to fit PS box - Pics?
I have a winter project to convert my 67 to power steering. Any issues with spacing the box out versus dimpling the frame?

I spaced mine out on my '67 Panel Truck. If I remember right I used 3/16" spacers. The only thing I noticed was that the truck turned a little sharper to the right than it did to the left. I removed the pitman arm and filed a groove in the flat area inside so that the pitman arm could be rotated to any position.... Centered the wheels, centered the steering wheel, put the pitman arm on and tightened everything up. LockDoc .

Re: 1967 core support bracket mod to fit PS box - Pics?
The issue is minor but it exists. When you space the steering box out the Pitman arm moves with it and as a result the wheels get turned to the left. This of course can be compensated by adjusting the steering links and repositioning the steering wheel.
Once that is done your steering will work fine with the exception of the truck won't turn as sharp at full lock one direction compared to the other direction. (To left if I remember correctly) This occurs because there are internal stops inside the steering box. As there are hundreds of steering box configurations your particular box may allow enough travel to hit the stops on the control arms before the internal stops. Some folks never notice it other folks can't stand it. Gosh that Leon has fast fingers. Must be how he got to be a Moderator

Re: 1967 core support bracket mod to fit PS box - Pics?
Don't use spacers you'll just create problems for yourself , The amount the 67 frame needs to be "dimpled" is so minimal it can be done without any evidence to the top rail of the frame .
