all you westerners and southwesterners are lucky.. decent parts stores are a ***** to find, most any part has to be ordered in order to get it, aftermarket parts like manifolds and carbs and such arent easy to find in stores, i hear thta parts liek that are on shelves in stores elsewhere ? what about camshafts and heads and such ? stuff like that exist on store shelves anywhere ? that would be freaky to see, if so.,..

i hear that! im in south texas. even though there is several chain stores, pepboy.oreily, and even a napa (my fav). they all suck. rude, unknowledgable, and over priced... wish montana wasnt so dam cold all the time, im missing normal people.

You think that Schucks is a decent auto parts store? The only thing they are good for is oil, cleaners, cheap tools, etc. If you have to ask them for a part, forget about it. They have no clue what-so-ever. Of course, my parents own an auto parts store so I have high standards! If I want real parts, I either phone my parents or visit the local NAPA store.

Napa is the best place I'd HOPE to get the parts I need (notice I reserve the right to trash them too). Sometime's they've let me down hard.

There's only one Schucks in all of Washington state I'll go to. It's the one just north of Seattle on Aurora (hwy 99) past 85th as you near the turn to go to Northgate. There's a guy in there that races hotrods, and he works the parts counter. He's always in there working on someone's flywheel, or telling someone how to adjust their carb. There's this anoyingly slow check-out lady, though. She's wired to only run on 1/2 speed.

Every other schucks is a waste of time.

They got a couple of checkers (same company) close to here but there prices are just about the same as NAPA here. The only good thing is they will beat anyones price by 5% so it can be of some benifit to shop there.

We don't have a kragan or schucks around here. I only go to a place called Hammon's. It's a privately owned parts store. Everyone who works there knows there cars. Even the owners wife knows more than I'll probably ever know. Theres only about 8 people who work there and they've been there as long as I can remember. Great people too. Everytime I went to O'Reileys or Auto Zone I got the wrong parts.

Don't be too upset about not having a Schuck's near you. They're kind of the McDonald's of the auto parts business. I don't go there unless I know EXACTLY the part I need, or just need to pick up something basic like motor oil or an air filter.
I've always been very happy with NAPA. I was trying to find a part once for my front brake calipers, and I couldn't explain very well what I was looking for, so the guy behind the counter had the shop next door put my truck up on the lift and pulled one of the tires so I could show him.

I'm not proud to say we have Checker and Auto Zone here, either. I go to NAPA! My business helps sponser one of their employees at the local circle track, so I probably get special handling. Checkers is only good for oil. You can't even go there and ask for a set of Autolite #26 plugs, they have to know what it's for. I tell them my 56 Studebaker and they tell me the computer doesn't go back that far. Hell, they can't spell Studebaker!

Napa gets 99.8%of my business. I spend alot of money in there. My father in law is always telling me to drive the extra 40 miles to go to O'reily, but every time I do, I have to order the part and it doesn't save me enough money to drive up there twice. Most of the time I have to order from Napa too, there isn't a very big demand for older parts in my area though. but I'm in town every day anyway.

YA'LL ARE MAKIN' ME FEEL BAD...
I just quit my job of 5 years at a NAPA store. I went to a local wholesale auto warehouse that sells to the local parts stores... I have been in the Parts business for 16 years... hell, If I had sold parts to all ya'll, I would not have quit. I got tired of people asking for "that little silver thing with the wire on it, thats under my car. my mechanic says I need, and where does it go?" only to find out its the oxygen sensor... Or...get this
A guy bought a can of R-134 freon and wanted a screwdriver to poke a hole in the top of the can,to pour into his compressor he had just taken' the lines off the back off in the parking lot... now I sell to the knowledgeable parts guys/gals...lot less headache's....but I do agree NAPA does have good parts, and usually better parts people. If not, Hell, tell the owner, they are all mostly independently owned, let them know its the people that make you go there, it might help get better people, or help pay to keep the better people there.

The Napa vendors in my area are alot more expensive! I just can't afford to pay top dollar all the time so im forced to do what most do. Buy at the chain type stores.

I miss the good old days before chain stores.

Around here the chain stores really suck. prices are cheap but you get the junk that you pay for. More and more of the professional parts stores, many independant ones, are disappearing and good quality yet affordable parts are going with them. Quality parts are getting harder to find in general. In the last 7 years I have had to replace my water pump five times, my clutch fan 3 times (no the fan is not bent or out of balance),the starter 3 times, my HEI module 4 times and the distributor pick up coil 3 times. On a Toyota I have I replaced the water pump 3 times in two years and the clutch fan as many times. I have gotten tired of this and now spend more money at the GM and Toyota dealers. I pay more up front but it has ended up cheaper in the long run. I still do trust brands like Federal Mogul, Moog, CR, etc but good struff is definetly harder to find no matter where you are.

i will never, ever, buy from the cheap parts store.. major parts that is. sure some my have a life time warenty..lol i changed my alternator 6 dam times in 3 years.. ended up buying a good one. i got tired of changing the thing. not worth it

you get what you pay for. napa does cost more, but its cheaper to do things one right. then 10 times the cheap way. not to mention if you sell your truck, its a major plus when they see napa part recepts.. at least it is to me..
