Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

Build the under seat slide out drawer and mocked up the seat enclosure in cardboard. I used a commercial 75# full extension ball bearing glide. I've done this before on custom vhs and cd cabinets I built.

Is that where you're going to stash your gun. What you going to put over the card board?

Man that's a smooth set-up!!! I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. Looks like an MP5 or the Beretta Storm...hell, even an M4 CQB could fit nicely. Please don't break my heart, and tell me your going to stuff gloves and tools in there.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

Cardboard is just a mockup to get the shapes right. Next step for the corneers will be to make some wood framing to stretch tee shirt fabric over for fiberglass. The side panels will me MDF. Both will get covered with vinyl to match the seats. In the front I am building as long narrow tray/cover that will be lined with heavy fabric for flash lights, etc.

Very nice design. Going to look great when it's all glassed and painted.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

Worked today and got the wood part built. Put the fabric on one and noticed it is creating a concave place where I want a level or even convex curve. I am going to remove it and use some insulating foam to form the curve. Here are the rough forms. Taking longer than I thought it would, now I know why I just had a Mexican blanket draped down on the stock seat! In the photo with the side cover the side just sitting, when done it will line up. On the passenger side it will either be hinged or just snap off, that side is going to have all the stereo electronics, etc. Seat will tilt up for access too.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

It's all coming along nicely. One thing that I do that might save some time on small parts is after making your cardboard form (the first one) I cover that in the metal tape thats used for duct work, the glue the edges of your fabric and pull it into shape. I then do my resin, followed up with some filler if needed (only if painting part) I have a post somewere on here were I made a center console this way. Also on your corner peices which I copied (thank you) I filled the back side with spray foam to make it more ridged.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

The metal duct tape is a really good idea. I was thinking of foaming the back of the corners too, glad to know it worked. I was worried it might get damp and deform the inside curve. Will not be working on the truck for a while I got a new tenant for my building and another wants to move to another part so I will be a carpenter, drywaller and painter for a while. Good news is I scored a bunch of free commercial carpet, doors and hardware and sheet rock for the work.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

I foamed the cab corners on my 53. I doubled up 2 kitchen trash bags. Put them in the cab corners and sprayed the foam into them. Tied them and folded the ends into the corners.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

Thought I was going to get to do some fiberglass but it turned cold again. Yesterday went to Firebird Raceway annual swap meet. It snowed in the morning and was bright and sunny in the afternoon. Picked up a set of chrome beauty rings for the 16" steel wheels for $10. Also a 59 Elky or Belair glove door for the latch. The bezel is different, I thought I might be able to swap it out but after much head scratching it looks like its all one part. There was lots of good deals OR overprice rust for sale. Two TF trucks one for 5K one for $6500. Both just rollers, 5K one had a camaro clip. Lots of rust and missing chrome, gauges, etc. I decided to attack the bumpers, want to weld and smooth the bolts and prep for paint.

Installed the steering shaft last night. Forgot the steering column needed to be loose so I got to r&r that for the install.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

Fiberglass for the cab corners and seat corner to hide the frame. These show the spray foam backing the cab corner cardboard, front fiberglassed, and the seat frame front corner glassed and sanded. I have the first coats of body filler on to smooth out the bumps. Just trying to get it smooth enough for the heavy fabric to lay smooth.

FWIW the home store foam reacts (melts) with fiberglass resin so you need to paint it with a couple of coats of latex paint as a barrier. I found that out after I had foamed and shaped the seat corners. There are two part commercial foams that are resin resistant. Fiberglassforums.com has a lot of good info on constructing this type of stuff.

EDIT- the one corner has a hole from a test run to make sure the speaker magnet would clear. When I get the speakers I will build extensions and glass them down to the main pieces like I did with the kick panel speakers.

Great idea for a column cover. EUREKA! You always seem to amaze me Orrie. Great job. I might have to use this idea also if you don't mind?

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

Thanks for the kind words. You can use anything you find in my thread, a lot of it is copied or adapted from others here or elsewhere. One thing about the plastic pipe is it wants to warp and if it does fiberglass or bondo will not stick to it. I am covering mine in fake leather which has some forgiveness. If you look on the fiberglass sites guys use the pipe to make a mold to make a fiberglass piece. I'm not that ambitious for something that will be mostly up under the dash. I have to keep reminding myself that a lot of the stuff I do is only for me since it will be hidden most of the time!

Sanding on the seat and cab corners. Took a break and decided to install the radiator brace and inner fenders to route heater hoses, etc. Here are some shots of the hose support, grommets and mock up to the block. I did not want the hoses running over the valve cover. I am leaving enough slack to allow for the future Sandon Compressor on the passenger side.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

Good day, found a local place that will crimp my AC fittings for $3 a hose end. Local AC shops wanted $20 or so for the same work. I need to buy material and have them ready to go but with the custom fabrication that is a given.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics

Finished up the seat frame covers and upholtered one to see what it will look like. Going to wait on the others until it gets warmer, don't want it to buckle up on me when it gets warmer. Here is the passenger side, I used cabinet clips so I can access below the seat without tilting it. Not bad for first try at upholtering. Also got a bunch of misc. stuff done while waiting for filler to dry. Still looking for a third groove pulley so I can start buttoning up the fan and radiator.

Nice ideal with the cabinet clips, will have to give it a try, if you don't mine. The material on the cover looks great.
