HOW bad is this really....?

So today i replaced the lower radiator hose which was leaking, and discovered TONS of rust buildup where the hose connects to the engine block. the engine has been running slightly hot, but been drove all day without problems. How ramped is this rust likely to be within the block? i tired flushing with CLR and radiator flush, but its too extreme to be a fix. think I'm done for? any suggestions? truck had been siting for 6 years with just water or very little anti freeze when i got it.

That should be the water pump... I would replace the pump and try flushing again, and possibly hooking up a pump to flow fluid reverse to flush more out.

I'd drain out the coolant, flush with lots of water, then add a 1/2 cup of liquid dishwasher detergent (the GEL stuff) run the truck for 20 miles, maybe a bit longer, drain and repeat. You would be surprised as to how much crap that will clean out! Then, I would use the radiator flush that you get at the parts store....make sure you turn your heater on full blast too, that way you get everything out.....HTH,

if its not already disconnect the heater core flush it 3 or 4 more times with whatever you can find that is caustic before you replace the water pump even draino drain cleaner be prepaired to possibly replace radiator due to the caustic but better than replacing the motor it will come out I have had to do this before myself

I would remove the top radiator hose and stick the garden hose in there and flush it out the best I could. It wouldn't be a bad idea to remove the radiator when you do this. Flush the heater core with the hose and compressed air just be careful not to over do it, wouldn't want to wreck the heater core. Its also a good idea to do both ways in the heater core. As for the engine itself I would crawl underneath the truck and (assuming you have a SBC engine I not sure about the I6 but I would think it would have something similar) just above the oil pan you will find a plug on either side of the motor. should be 1/2 or 9/16 socket. Remove it. This will drain the water jackets. I would remove the thermostat on the intake and put the garden hose in there and let it run and get as much crud out as possible. After that I think you should be in pretty good shape! a lot of work yes but good results!

I don't know where it's ethical or legal to dump it these days, but in my youth we'd buy an adapter that T's into the heater hose. Connect the hose. Add one can of caustic soda radiator flush, run the engine hot at high idle for like 10 minutes, then turn the hose on and drain.

It might work 60% as well without the caustic soda and be nicer to whatever you're dumping it in.

If you do use a flush, make sure you don't dump it into a river or something, not all storm drains are equal!

i'd be real careful with acid based flushes, you might find out your headgaskets are not too good either.

I don't know if I'm picking nits or there are two different things, but the buildup in the cooling system is usually acidic on its own, which is why they use a very strong base (likely lye) to clean it out. I think an acid would be less effective than even plain water.

If your antifreeze is adequate and you have no other foreign material entering the cooling system. this shoudnt happen. Your engine probably has tiny leaks (usually in the head gaskets) where combustion gases are leaking into the cooling system. (This causes an acidic condition) the kind of corrosion and "gunk" that will eventually clog and destroy your radiator and heater core. Flush the system and refill it with a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water. If within about a month's use if is getting dirty again, do a leak-down test on all cylinders. the ones with the most leakage are probably the culprits. make sure your radiator cap is not leaking too! A catch tank is a good idea too It will with the right cap prevent air (oxygen) from leaking back into the system when it cools.

You already drained the coolant, take it in for reclimation.

Unhook heater core and flush it separate.

take the larger heater core hose and hook it to the engine where the other hose attaches to engine.

fill with water and use the dish soap gel first, run to hot and drain and repeat couple times as nessasary.

Swap out water pump and thermostat, run and flush with dish washing gel a couple more times.

After flushing heater core reattach to engine, full with water and run, turn on heater to full hot, run till hot then inspect, flush with gel again if needed.

Once clean refill and use antifreeze mix 50/50
