Early Banks Air Cleaner Upgrade Kit?
Saw this on a truck for sale online.
Banks offers something similar for big block motor homes but this looks different. Looks like a nice vintage upgrade but can't find anything like it on the web. Most likely discontinued by Banks a long time ago. |

Re: Early Banks Air Cleaner Upgrade Kit?
Looks like fluff to me. The air cleaner isn't the issue, the tube the feeds it is restrictive. But in reality, unless you changed the CFM of the TBI and the heads, nothing is going to give you any more power in thes engines. The engine does breathe a little easier with better exhaust but that's about it unless you start spending $ on heads, cam, and other TBI upgrades.

Re: Early Banks Air Cleaner Upgrade Kit?
All I see is the ability to install a taller air filter. The lid looks like the factory heavy duty air cleaner option on the square body trucks in the 80's. This is the second one of these I have seen. probably just removed from an old motor home at some point.
I didn't figure it would do much, just though it was neat to see an old "hop up kit" from yester year. |

Re: Early Banks Air Cleaner Upgrade Kit?
So, if i recall...summit or jegs or both used to offer a KIT for these trucks...
it had, a non silenced but corrugated intake tube, throttle body spacer and a chip. on my 89, i had the tube and chip...it ran much better than a stock unit. as for the banks LID in the pic, i would almost bet they could pull old stock and may still have one. like stated, the biggest restriction is the tube...DO NOT REMOVE IT, but rather locate a smooth one or fab one up |

I do remember seeing that intake tube kit offered not that long ago.

Re: Early Banks Air Cleaner Upgrade Kit?
Far as I remember, that was the standard look for the 88-95 model. Early version of the cold air intake. Gets air theu the gap between the inner and outer fender. All of mine had that look, except for the fancy lid. Vortecs (96 up) moved it to in front where the battery is on that one.
I am old, but that is what I remember from all of my V8 models
