K10 SWB Purchase
I had some fun this past weekend and thought you might enjoy some pics
It took me a few minutes to convince myself (and roughly a week to convince my wife) that I needed another truck, but it is hard to turn down a '72 SWB 4x4. Somewhat surprisingly, the truck was still available when I called to try to make it mine. A few things that I think are interesting about it: -It is a 4x4 that was ordered without F76 Front Wheel Lock Hub...Sorta rare (also probably not desirable). -It is a 4x4 that was sold new in New Mexico...The build sheet appears to show it delivered to Ed Black's Chevrolet Center on San Mateo Blvd in Albuquerque. With the front and rear glass removed for who knows how long, I was surprised to find any of the build sheet remaining. -It was built with heavy duty everything--radiator, springs, battery, and the high-amp generator. With all of those items and the manual throttle, I wonder if it was used for plowing in a past life. The little electrical connector on the front bumper might also point to this. I'm not sure what my long term plans are for the truck. In the short-term, I'll be focusing on my K20 build. I did grab another cab and some sheet metal from the seller. The K10 cab has had a lot of cutting done without bracing and has an antenna hole in the roof...which makes me nervous. Some questions I have: -I am confused by the 3.73 axle RPO. What was the standard ratio for a K10? I thought it was 3.73. -Are there any examples of Ed Black dealer emblems or decals? If so, I'm wondering where they were typically placed on the truck...cowl, tailgate, etc.. For everyone's future reference: a U-Haul truck will successfully haul a cab and a trailered truck. The rear axle bump stops were about an 1" from touching. |

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
Awesome! Cool to see one sold somewhat local. My K20 wasn’t built with lockouts either. That’s a pretty nice spid, heavy duty stuff in a cheyenne with a tach. I think 3.07 may have been the standard ratio in the V8 K10. Ochre and saddle is one of my favorite combos. If you decide not to build I may have interest.

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
Beautiful truck, great find!
Would it be unusual for these heavy duty options to be in a shortbed? That's what stands out to me, seems like the buyer would want that payload space as well... or maybe they wanted it to be maneuverable for plowing?

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
Looks like a good project. A pic of my C20 tailgate placement of the factory Ed Black's decal. A guy reproduced them I'll see if I can find them.

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
So these are some he made looks like one for the window and one for the body. It doesn't look like what I assume is the original one on my tailgate though. The forum member was from Pennsylvania but I dont recall his handle here.

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
Nice find. I remember Ed Black’s. It’s a Walmart now.
The dealer memorabilia isn’t too hard to find. I don’t recall a metal Ed Black dealer emblem. Like another local dealer, Galles, I believe the trucks got decals like Derrick shows. YouTube has example Ed Black’s commercials.

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
Any SWB K10 is a great find, congratulations John. Please let me know if you ever change your mind on the project and decide to get rid of the frame and a 72 AC cab. :-)
I think I bought one or more of those Ed Black decals when they were repopped, let me take a look. |

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
I believe 3:07 was the standard gear ratio.

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
3.07 gear ratio was standard with a 350 engine and 3.73 ratio was the option. With a 307 or 6-cyl engine 3.73 was the standard (and only available) ratio.

Re: K10 SWB Purchase
I found this chart today and am sharing it for others' reference. The chart details what many of you were saying.... That the 3.07 was the standard for 350 engine.
