Pulling distributor - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm considering pulling the old distributor and replacing it with an HEI unit. My spark plug wires are chewed up by rats and it's time to replace them anyway.

When I was looking at my engine this morning it doesn't look like the distributor could be pulled up and out without hitting the firewall above the distributor. My engine is a 307 and it is in my 4x4.

This pic doesn't show the potential problem too well, but maybe you can see the problem.

Anyone have a similar problem? If so, what was your solution?
