Question removing abs

i have a 96 s10 that has abs on it. i don't feel that they stop the truck as well as they should. the brakes work great until you have to slam on them hard. i have had abs before and know how it works, but my truck seems to lose too much braking power when they come on.

is there anyway to disconnect the abs and leave the truck with manual brakes? any help would be appreciated. i figured i would start here...

ryan.
