Post 1969 panel 4X4 396?

I saw this very original looking(faded gold paint) 1969 Chev panel truck, it was 4 wheel drive, sitting in an impound yard, I could not look in glovebox, but it sure looked real. The interior was original and ratty, and the front fenders with the 396 badge looked like they were born there. It this some older mod, or am I wrong in thinking 4X4's did not come in Big blocks?
This could be had cheap, I think, but my yard is so full of crap I dont really want another truck unless it something really worth somthing.
