700r4 tranny questions (I have searched the board)

Everyone,
I have studied the boards trying to learn all I can about this. I have a few unanswered questions. I want to put 700r4 into my 1/2 ton lwb 4wd truck. I bought a tranny from a local guy where i live, he didnt know much about it. Turns out it is made in 83, from what I have read, not the most desireable year I know. It also has a tail shaft on it with a mechanical speedo connector on it. I think that means it was originally in a 2wd? Can it still work for my application? Also, I think I need to buy an adaptor to marry the tranny and trans together? Is that correct? I know advanced adaptors sells one. Currently it has a TH350 in it. If I do add the adaptor, does that move everything back in the drivetrain? So will I have to change the crossmember holding the transfer case back? Also, will it move the shifter for the transfer case back and how far? Will it still fit through the current hole in the cab floor? I have also read that the yoke may be different on the transfer case or transmission 27 spline vs 30? Not sure about that one.

I am no concerned about the throttle control cable adjustment and all that yet, just the basics on if this trans will work for me.

Is there any way to test it to make sure it works before I go through the hassle to install it? The guy said it worked but you never know, he did seem a bit shady.

I have read the sections in the FAQ and studied all the links there also and dont have clear answers to these questions. Any other insight is appreciated as well.
Thanks in advance for your input.
