Heater problem.

I have been having problems with my truck lately ('06 GMC regular cab) with heat control.
If I have the heat switch pushed all the way up (hot) then bring it down to about the 2/3 mark (still in the "red" area) it will start blowing cold air after a few minutes.
If I move it up a notch, after a minute or two it will start blowing hot air again. Not warm, but hot like it is pushed all the way up.
If I bring it back down a notch it starts blowing cold again. Not cooler, but cold.

It seems I only have hot or cold and no in between??
This is something new as far as I can tell; I am pretty sure I could regulate the temperature the past two winters.

I have checked the coolant overflow and it appears to be full. Even added about a 1/4 a bottle of antifreeze just to be safe but that brought the overflow up over the full mark.

Anyone else having problems like this?
