GM tilt column question....

I have a 1982 Eldorado tilt/tele column I am putting in the 59. Question is concerning the rod activated electrical connectors. the one on the top is for the ignition switch similar to the 74 truck column I have. There is a second on the side that regardless of what I move, the rod does not move. What is it for??? Reason for asking is using the current column support the hanger will prevent the rod from moving. I want to know if it is something I can jump electrically or if the rod function is necessary. Not at home or would post a picture, I'll shoot one tonight. I tried to find a exploded diagram on line but no go. From what I have seen the eldo column has a couple of extra connectors not found on the standard GM columns. Thanks
