Dan,
the point of the slapper is that it has a larger surface area and therefore spreads the force of the blow lessen the chance of damaging the panel. It is also easier to find the dolly.

Yes you should be applying upward pressure with the dolly when doing both hammer ON and hammer OFF.

This might help you out on some hammer and dolly techniques...Eric
