Wheel question...

Ok so I am going to buy a set of wheels soon and plan on going with 18s since I am a lil old school and still like some tire under my fender but i notice alot of folks putting wider wheels in the back and I know it looks outstanding but I want to get the most life from my tires and want to be able to rotate them. So can I not just run the same size on the front and rear like they did from factory? I assume its just the looks everyone is going for and I am all about the wider tires but anywho just curious. And these will be going on my 71 swb with ece 4/6 drop.
