Fuel gauge question

OK so when I took out my gauge cluster to clean it all up and paint the needles, I think I moved the gas needle a little bit. So tonight I went and filled the tank full and thinking the needle would be off I was trying to push it back to full to make it right but it just kept going over the full mark. WEW windy I know lol. So my question is......well the fuel gauge auto set it self or is it totally jacked now? Im going on a long drive and dont really know where to trust the gauge is at haha
