Question Protecting door mount speakers from rain?

Hey guys, I just recently removed the 6x9 door speakers that were installed in my truck when I got it. I've been driving around without the speaker covers on and I noticed that when it rains, the water drips right where the speaker is! I've heard about the boot things to put the speaker assembly in, but word is that they completely destroy bass response. I'm planning to add subs later but right now it's a last priority. Has anyone had experience with waterproofing that area or come up with nifty tips to help save my new speakers?
