HEI wire

So my dad and I put an HEI on my 70 SWB when I was 5 years old. 25 years later I started having HEI problems. This truck has been my daily driver for the last 15 years. I went ahead and put a brand new Distributor in the truck. That is when I noticed this, see picture below with large to small wire splice.

Is this bad?

What do I need to do, run thicker wire?

Why has it ran fine for the last couple decades like this?

Here is a link with pictures of my new distributer and engine bay
