The reason was so i could put the bbc where the sbc goes .also really just widen it for the ablity to take the valve covers off and more access to the back of the engine. was able to use headers for 67-72 bbc hooker. hope this helped.
 p.s.first firewall was not to pretty so redid it second one is the way to go .use 16 ga, cold rolled. i.e painted one
