Water Pump cooling questions

I have a new pump, new 4 core, new 185 thermostat, I dont have my heater core hooked up and both of the small heater hose ports on my water pump capped,I let it idle till it comes up to about 185 and it drops down to about 165on a cool day,on a hot day around town it was holding about 190. I noticed today letting it idle with my radiator cap off when it reaches temperature and thermostat opens the water in my radator isnt flowing the level is just sort of pulsing up and down. Im starting to wonder if I have a reverse rotation pump on there??
Is there anyway to tell without pulling the pump off and taking it apart?
thanks jim
