402 timing question

I had to replace some collapsed lifters so I figured since I'm in this far I would pull all the goodies on the front. Now I have decided to get a gear drive for fun new noises. Do I need to remove the doohickee with the timing line on it and drop the oil pan (as I have read about) to access the timing cover for the gear drive ?
Thank you for your help and time.

never been this far into a engine but your not gonna learn until ya get dirty, right ? I don't even have a torque wrench yet, lol
