Newbie to blazers..

I just bought myself a 71 4x4 blazer. I own a 67 2wd chevy short bed truck. I have to do repairs to this blazer in the rocker area which includes the rocker box area and some of the door area. What is the whole meaning of the rocker box? It seems like wasted space. The chevy trucks just have support braces in front and in back of cab. Can I eliminate the rocker box and do the same thing as a pickup cab? Thanks for any input...
