Inner Fender well Coating Advice

I just picked up some new front inner fenders. I'm looking for some opinions as to how or if I should coat the inside before I install them. As much as I'd like to keep them painted black, I'm concerned with the practicality of that, since its a driver & not a trailer queen. I don't do gravel roads but inevitably you pick up a rock that is going to be hurled towards the fender well & leave it's impression on it. What do you think as far as what to use & your experiences? Thanks guys!
