Step side won’t start

Cold weather truck wouldn’t start so I jumped it everything was fine. Came back later for one last check before bedtime and wouldn’t start. Tried jumping it again and smoke came from wires near master cylinder I think they are connected to starter solinoid. Just not sure. Installed new battery didn’t work. Did I fry something? Guy at auto store didn’t think it was starter.
