Thanks I popped over there - agreed about using heater hoses too.
I only crack my hose a bit on the inside 90 degree bend (did not break it in half), so I wrapped it with normal black electrical tape and then used engine bay wire fabric wrap tape over that. Though I want to get a proper replacement. On my flame arrester, it was so clogged with gunk I could hardly push air through it (I'd say 95% blocked). It was great to read all I needed to do is "un-gunk" it! I have a feeling that wasn't very good it not letting air through.
