Lower Bump Stops

I found lots of articles about them but no secrets to getting them installed?
The front suspension on my 68 had drop springs and was sitting on the bump stops....and they were shot.
In the process of upgrading to disc brakes, I removed the drop springs and went to drop spindles...got them in last night and mocked up enough to put the wheels on and check the stance...perfect!
Now I have about 3" of suspension travel and I want to put new bump stops on.
I tried several ways to get them into the slot...to no avail...
Is there a trick that I don't yet know?
