In use it is more about squeezing many times and moving it around than brute force, not sure vice grip compound action would be better, but I think the locking feature would be a detriment.

The piece that goes inside the gutter has to be smaller than the finished profile to fit into the gap, so over-doing it would give you a stretched section that you would have to deal with.

I was pretty much able to get to 'metal finished' but probably spent a hour or two on each side.
