Old distributor refresh, timing questions

Was messing with my distributor today, I bought a moroso advance kit and gear shims. The old springs are pretty loose and the gear has about .080 of play. I shimmed the gear to about .015 of play and the distributor will still drop in and sit down on the intake without a gasket, so I think I'm good there for clearance.

I installed the included copper bushing, the old plastic one had fallen off. From what I'm figuring (and online calculatoring) .. I have about 17 degrees of mechanical advance, so 34 crank degrees?
Am i down to welding the slot closed a bit to limit the advance? From what I'm reading the vortecs like 8-10 degrees at idle and 30-32 total?
