Great deal! The accessories are worth almost that.

Re: 402 bbc question

My info came from one of my best friends grandfather. we used to go visit him every now and then when we were in high school. He worked at a GM casting factory outside of indianapolis. He retired when i was in high school and had a collection of GM cars and trucks that would make you cry!!! He also got a really fat discount on anything new from GM.

Re: 402 bbc question

I think $700 is a good deal for the motor and accessories so the trans would be a bonus. AC brackets alone could be worth 1/3 that.

I am interested in the 468 if you can get a price less trans from the guy or I can ask if you'd rather pass his info along in a PM or something.

Re: 402 bbc question

That sounds like a fair deal. You know the brackets vary from the trucks to cars? I just picked up a 73 454 and the brackets are all different. Still hard to find brackets but wanted you to know they may be different.

Re: 402 bbc question

I have a chevy engine builders book some where boxed up with some of my old magazine collection. It has several chapters by smokey y "best damn garage in town".That is where I first read about 402s being .30 396s and was to out cub the largest smallblock starting in 1970.He put a 69 chevy 302 crank in a 400 small block with bearing spacers and 6'' rods It was a 350 something cubic inch motor built this way and was something he built for round track racing that had a 355 cubic in class limit. It was suppose to be able to turn 10grand with the 3'' stroke. The 6'' rods made the pistons dwell at top dead center longer for better combustion and reduced the tendencies of the short stock 400 rods to push the pistons toward the cyl walls. He said it would way out perform a standard design 350 because it pulled so hard off the corners and with the high rpm capability he could run a higher gear for even more pull off the corners.there never was a 396 anymore after 1970 only 402s. The 402 is ok for a restored bb truck but for performace and a driver nothing beats a 400 smallblock in my personal opinion.

Re: 402 bbc question

The trucks have the alt. on the drivers side and have a canister fill for the power steering. (long hose to the fender to add fluid). A/C is on the pass side on a truck also. Hope that helps. I could take some pics if that may help you.

Re: 402 bbc question

I have been a BBC Chevelle/Elky guy for several years until I got this '68 truck. I just sold my original 1969 SS396 Chevelle last year. The 1969 was last year of the short water pump in Chevelles, not sure on other BBCs for trucks.

Re: 402 bbc question

my67chevytruck, It definately sounds like a good deal. From what I have seen things selling for on this board the a/c brackets are worth $200-250 and the power steering set up is worth $150-200. That alone adds up to around half of the asking price without even counting the actual big block engine.

Ive only met a couple people that knew this. They like me happened to just know the right person that worked for GM at this particular point in time. Its not something that was ever advertised i dont think. Interesting though if you ask me.

Oh buggers Monte0185, now I know my motors an off child .. thanks good buddy

Seriously, price wise, I bought a complete 402 (and I mean complete..included radiator,
pan to intake, all brackets, engine mounts, headers, etc...) from a board member
for $800 and I figure I got a very rare deal.

IMHO, for a good running, low mile 402 engine alone, I would suspect that the same price
would be appropriate and, if I was looking wouldn't hesitate.

BTW, Too Much Stuff, thanks for the pics...mine's still on a stand with accys in boxes

No problem. You should be able to see the difference in power steering set-up and alt. location from truck to car. I think the 73 and later truck big blocks are like the car set ups. So did ya buy it?

Waiting on him.. he was out of town. and i am trying to schedule something up for him. I would guess its the car BB as he mentioned it was from a wagon... also found out he has a 327 with 6-pack but it has sentimental value so he's hangin onto it.
