Starter Service
O.K., now we're getting to the meat of the thing .
? When it cranks, is the starter noisy ? . if not your problem is simply the mesh of the Bendix and ring gear and I can tell you how to adjust it at home if it's a parallel two bolt one . If it makes gnashing sounds when it's cranking, you have the wrong starter, it's fairly common on older rigs , there are two different Bendix tooth counts that I recall, not off the top of my head but this is one of those detail things that makes it so important to retain the old worn out part until the job is 100% done to your satisfaction . I must have mis understood something you said earlier to think it was an i6 . Same deal, many here have intricate knowledge of the SBC Chevy V8 engine so ask away and sort through the collected answers before taking the next step .

Re: Spitfire
If the starter gear doesn't retract, it could be the wrong starter and it's binding, or maybe the return spring in the solenoid is broken or weak.

Re: Spitfire
how do I know which ones the right one? Sparks come from the flywheel when it gets in the bind

Re: Spitfire
You could try to count the teeth on your starter and go to parts store to check that yours is correct. I doubt that was the problem though. Either like already said about spring or starter needs shimmed where it mounts up so it meshes the flywheel correctly.
It's not uncommon to get a starter that is a real pain to shim correctly. I fought one forever and finally put on a new one. The new one meshed perfectly. I wonder when you get a rebuilt 350 starter just how many times that thing may have been rebuilt. I am getting to the point I only buy new and not rebuilt when anything comes from a generic parts store. Of course I'm getting older and crusty about things too so it may not be necessary. |

Re: Spitfire
Starter was the issue. Bendix wasn't extending right. New one cranks her over like new. Now to get a set if plugs and wires lol

! Progress !
Glad to hear you're working, everything else flows down from that .
Remember to never trust the spark plugs to be properly gapped from the box, points ignition use .035", any breakerless ignition used at least .045" plug gap ~ you'll feel the extra power, smoother running and better fuel economy right away .

Re: Spitfire
Looking good! I'm only 45 minutes from you. It would be nice to go down there and check out your truck when I get a little more time this fall.

Re: Spitfire
I see that the starter appears to be working ok now. A word of advice. If it normally starts well when cold but seems like it is hard to start when warm, see if there is a cover over the starter solenoid. That is the little round thing attached to the starter. When the header is too close, it overheats the bendix and then it tends to turn slower because it is too hot. The cover I am talking about is available in the help section of most auto parts stores. You normally do not have a problem if you are using stock manifolds.

That's great you are now able to get some work done to her. Congrats on the better job. The younger population is pretty lucky with the record low unemployment. You can jump from one job to another and most times make more money with every move!
