Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
Was the old module AND the new module doing this?? If not, then try another module.

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
Thanks for all the help fellas, especially the ones that said the ballast wire needs to be replaced, it was not.
Replaced the wire from the firewall to the Distributor and it Ran Great, all the way until it died due to carb getting too hot. only way it will start is WOT. So now onto a spacer to rectify that problem. Any preference on spacers? for a factory Q-Jet, Factory intake. |

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
I only suggested you confirm the voltage to the dist since it's easy to overlook and I didn't see anything in your post indicating you had verified that - other than the swap was done by a reputable shop, but maybe I missed it.

I hit the throttle linkage on the carb and when it sprayed gas it just started smoking(out of carb) hence the spacer idea, i figured it was like that because of how hot it got. So flooding is my main concern, Am I wasting time and money with a spacer? |

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
you said new carb? where did it come from? New or rebuilt? Some QJet experts might give you some tips.

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
Needing to go wot to start it means it needs more air to mix with the excess fuel in the carb/intake.
The smoking isn’t from heat. It’s excess fuel vapour. Looks like smoke. Any carb that floods does that. Look in the carb while cranking it over or when you get it running. Any fuel seen at all means it’s flooding. Could be dirt in the needle/seat or a sunk float. |

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
Agreed, stock carb on a stock manifold shouldn't need a spacer to run right. It does sound like it is running rich.

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
Did you put the needle/seat back togethor correctly. The clip installed wrong causes flooding.

https://quadrajetparts.com/used-floa...319-p-398.html BUT because the reman one has this in it: https://quadrajetparts.com/carbureto...ket-p-438.html I had to shave down the sides and but out the center of it just to make it work. I have a 71 Q-Jet, and a 72 Q-jet that don't have the repair done. but they do need a GOOD cleaning, any benefit to rebuilding one of those? Since im doing it anyway. The float hinge is different on the repaired one, that is why i needed to shave it down. I hate to think of wasting the 500 on the reman and just shelving it, but I just want it done right. Thoughts? |

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
Gotta hate that cobbled togethor stuff.
I’d bite the bullet and rebuild one of the others with a much better kit from Cliff Ruggles. |

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
It could just be a float adjustment. If there was trash in your new carb, I assume you cleaned the needle and seat good. Were the primary needles moving smoothly/ not jammed or stuck?. If the needle and seat looked clean and the primaries are working like they are supposed to then I would just lower the float and try it again.

Re: Help...1972 350 W/HEI
If you still have the stock exhaust, make sure the riser valve(if it is still there) is working. I learned the hard way many years ago that too much heat on a Q-jet can screw it up, causing severe flooding. In my case, it was a collapsed inner wall on the OEM double wall Y-pipe blocking off one side that caused the problem.
If it is too late to return your newer troublesome Q-jet, worse case, you have a nice source of spare parts for future repairs. |
