Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
Does anyone know of a 65 inch to 66 inch wheel mount to wheel mount GM 6 lug axle that can be converted to replace a leaf spring 12 bolt that is 62 inch?
I am not sure of the widths of the newer like 1988 - 2007 or so. I will need a 3.73. I can remove/replace perches and shock mounts and can usually overcome e-brake obstacles. I want rear drum. thanks

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
I think the newer the axle the wider it is. I've been looking for axle widths and only finding stuff for rat rods and hot rods. But I wanna say 73 and up might be close to what you need. Discs didn't come out till 99-ish...

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
I had a 2006 K1500 and the wheels had a lot of rear offset. This makes me think the axle is longer. It was drum. I am thinking the square bodies up to 87 were 62 inch on the half tons. Been wrong before. Axles are not cheap at the junk yard. I will look on craigslist.

I have a 96 and 97 1/2 tons, one a 2wd the other a 4wd. I could measure the housing, taking the wheels off is a PITA, and being lazy lol...

I appreciate that but do not go to that effort unless you have another reason.

The '71-'87 ('91) 10 and 12 bolts are 63.5" wide. The '88-'98 10 bolts are 64.750" wide.

That 64 3/4 looks like the animal I need - I take 2wd. I will be looking for a 3.73 in that model. I think this will more align my back wheels with the front wheels which is a 84 K10 gm 10 bolt. That way I will need no rear spacers on my 59 gmc. I had a new 78. I think all the square bodies had the stock issue of the front track wider than the back. Thanks guys.

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
I'm not 100% but I think the axle housings are the same between 2wd and 4wd. If any difference in width it would be from the axle shafts, backing plates and drums. Again I can measure em tomorrow, since I want to know myself. The Yukon has 3.73 and is 4wd, the tahoe has 3.42s and is 2wd. I plan on doing an SAS to the Yukon, and would like to put 3.73s in the tahoe with a posi I picked up. Figured have some fun lol...

They are half or less then a diff rebuild around here, so I call them VERY cheap.

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
Granted it’s been awhile but local yard here has em for like $125, regardless of what it is. Wait, 8 lug, they charge more for those. But it’s not much more....

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
the Trailblazer SS has an approximately 66.25" WMS 14 bolt axle. I would think that you could bolt on a late model truck drum brake. I do know where there is a 4.10 axle sitting that could be had for a great price. PM me if you are interested.

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
The trailblazers are 6 lug but it is not 6 x 5.5". I don't remember exactly what the bolt circle is.

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
yup, you guys are correct. I learned something new. I lost my source for free re-drilling of wheel patterns, so no luck there. I picked this axle up with a complete AWD setup from a Trailblazer SS (minus engine) when I was thinking of doing an AWD C10.

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
Does the regular trailblazer use a different axle? My backing plates for my rear disk conversion on my 98 uses TB parts, bolt right onto the 10 bolt.

Backing plate to housing pattern is the same...truck & Trailblazer. Its the wheel bolt pattern that is different. Must be using truck rotors? Lorne

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
The junk yards around here must like to crush the 88 - 98's. I may be able to go up to a 2007. The 2006 I used to have had the setup I want, but I am not sure of the wms to wms distance yet.
I am not sure what u joint they use. It will get there one way or another. I have a friend of a friend from Strickers looking for a fit.

Re: Question - 65"-66" axle to replace a 12 bolt truck
I am installing an AAM 11.5 from a 2006 2500HD, a 1 ton axle in my 72 (should be same width as 1500). I wanted factory disc brakes in the rear. Do not have the WMS to WMS measurements in front of me but I can measure for you. When doing research I recall it was very close to the Dana 60 front I will be using. The Dana 60 front measurements are identical to Dana 44 IIRC. I know the rear axle is shorter on stock 4WD for some reason that I do not know.
