First classic bulid questions. Dad's '49
Seems that I can't edit the title. Should be First classic build questions. Dad's '49
This is my first new thread to a Forum. It's been mine for years. Finally coming home to be worked on. I don't know if I can do a build thread yet but do have a couple build questions. Has anyone ever done a 8 lug independent front suspension on one of these? Or even a lowered straight axle with air bags, disk brakes and/or power steering? I think I have an idea for suspension/brakes for the eaton rear end. The offroad guys have been doing a lot with these. Also which auto o.d. trans. fits the best with minimal modification keeping the inline 6? If anyone could help point me in the right direction it would be a great help. Welcome from just around the corner.
Looks like a solid truck. What are your plans for it? I can't answer any of your questions, but a buddy about a mile from me has updated a lot on his front suspension. It still isn't as low as he wanted and a Mustang 2 would have been cheaper in the long run.

Hi alaska gasser
I'm wanting to keep the it an 8 lug pickup. I would like air ride and a lug disks at all four courners. I could do a independent front but would want more strength and 8 lug over the mustang two. primarily just a couple inches of drop. |

Re: First classic bulid questions. Dad's '49
There is nothing wrong with wanting to keep the truck 8 lug, I am planning on keeping mine 6 lug with IFS. There is a project on here called LIL ERV. He used the front suspension from a 73-87 pickup and narrowed the control arms. This is going to be your best bet for keeping the truck 8 lug. I am planning on using the same setup because 73-87 trucks are cheep and easy to find parts for.
Here is a link to his thread the control arm mods are on page 3 and 4. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=530662&page=3

look at Denee's thread, she used a lowered stock axle with discs. I can't remember if the 8 lug front had different hubs, I suspect they might, which would make availability of disc conversion challenging. Not impossible, you just might end up doing some custom fab work on the hub and caliper mounts. Also consider the wheel you will want to use, most pre 73 wheels will not work with disc, not enough clearance for the calipers.
