I got rid of the Edelbrock 1406 and replaced with the Holley 4150 double pumper. The Edelbrock didn't have great performance, and I could never get the electric choke to work right. Once I tuned the Holley, the performance was significantly better.

Best carb I ever ran on a stock 350 was a 500 Edelbrock with a manual choke. Throttle response was awesome, so was gas mileage. With a TH350 and 3.73's, I got between 18 and 20 mpg.

If tuned right, I can get 16 mpg out of my 68 with a GMGoodwrench 350(260 hp) with a 570 Street Avenger.

If you're gonna buy a Demon, buy the expesive ones, don't waste your money on the Road Demon line.

If the thread starters truck were mine Id stay q-jet personally. fix or have someone fix your q-jet. a properly working q-jet will get just as much performance & MPG as the aftermarket.
that being said, if you are going aftermarket. its personal opinion. I personally dont have much use for Edelbrocks Carbs, although I love most of there other products.
Ive heard so many people complain about Holleys . Ive had the 770 Holley on my 454 for 4 years, never..ever a problem with it. John

FWIW, I vote to keep the Q-jet. When it comes to rebuilding, if I can do it, anyone can.

Thanks for all the input. I do have two quads so I think I will try rebuilding one of them. Thanks for the link Gman69 and rainfade.
I had thought about the edelbrock but my first truck (a 70 chevy) backfired through the carb and it was an edelbrock and the truck went up in flames I was considering giving them another chance but I think I will stay away from them for now, If I do decide to put another carb on it then I think I will get a holley. Thanks again.

The 1400-series Edelbrock carbs are their version of the AFB-series carbs. The 1900-series carbs are Q-Jet types. They also make an AVS-type of carb (aka Thermo-Quad).

Demon says the best thing to do is to contact the manufacturer to help you decide which of their carbs is best.

For trucks that are hauling a load, smaller primaries will help with the low-end torque, per Demon.

I replaced my 1405 (manual choke, performance jetting) with a 1901 (Q-Jet with divorced choke). I have been completely satisfied. I bolted it on and fired it up. Haven't touched it in 4 years. The 1405 ran rich, even though it is only a 600CFM, compared to the 750CFM rating of the 1901.

The 1405, and a new Edelbrock overhaul kit, are still in my garage, in the box that the 1901 came in. I haven't made up my mind as to what to do with it, but I like the AFB's when I had them on my '64 Bonneville and my '67 Skylark. They're good carbs, but for street use, the jetting needs to be re-done.

The Q-Jet is easier to rebuild (my opinion) than the AFB. Don't even talk to me about ThermoQuads. Holley and Ford(Autolite) carbs are also easy. As for the old 94 shown near the top of the post, the 97's have more history, but the 94's (Ford and Chandler-Grove) are both good old carbs, on the right engines.

The Holley Avenger or the Demon. Quadrajet is fine if you find a late model fairly low mileage one(late 70's) and someone with some old school know how. Problem with the older quads is age and wear.

My personal preference is the Edelbrock performer series carbs. I have had great luck with them. Holley's are just a pain every time the weather changes had to readjust them.

I have an Edelbrock 1406 on my 350 and I just got a Road Demon. As soon as I get the new 700r4 linkage plate from Bowtie overdrives I will put the Demon on and get rid of that Edelbrock carb. I've changed everything on that 1406 and it still doesn't run right. Even the Edelbrock techs can't figure it out. Maybe I just got a bad one. I'm not giving them a second chance.

The carter AVS and the thermoquad are not the same carb. The AVS (adjustable valve secondary) has an all metal body like the AFB and is a square bore with the primaries being slightly smaller than the secondaries. The thermoquad was a true spreadbore like the Q-jet and had a metal base and top but the center section was plastic(gas bowl area to keep it cool). The thermoquad wasnt made very long and has never been reproduced since and the old ones are hard to run because of no parts. Had a 73 340 Duster that came with a thermoquad stock and at the time was an OK carb.:::::::::CB

When I first got my 68 and the stock rebuild 350 I have a holley 650. Found myself tuning it every 5-6 days. When I got the qjet rebuilt I installed it, adjusted it and have not had to touch it. Also noticed about a 2 mpg increase.

Like I said before. The Holley on my 454 hasent seen a screwdriver in3 years. Oh wait, I put a bigger squirter in it a couple years back after switching intakes.

That being said...I think a properly tuned Q-jet is hard to beat. John

My edlebrock 1406 took quite a bit of tuning before it was right. After that I never had to touch it again. The stock Qjet performed similarly to the 1406 but got 2mpg better mileage. Right now i've got a rebuilt 600 holley vacuum secondary, converted to metering blocks on both ends and center hung bowls. This has the best performance/throttle response of the 3, but the worst mileage. About 1mpg less then the edlbrock and 3 less then the quad. I have replaced the powervalve once allready and its due for another now. Been about 2 years i think. This carb has powervalve protection too but still having problems. All of these were on the same truck/motor. Only reason I changed out the Qjet was because of the divorced choke.

On my other car I put an Edlbrock Qjet on. No adjustments were necessary. Great performance and has been very dependable. I think they quit making them though, so may be hard to come by.

If you want more power and performance then get a BG Demon. They are proven to outperform a Holley and Edelbrock. Plus they use many of the same parts as a Holley, like gaskets, jets, diaphrams, floats and so on.
