350 bucks for a 305???
Pass. The only thing that motor has going for it is the low miles. I'd expect to pay more liek 200 for it.
305's are a dime a dozen, and there is probably a guy within 50 miles of you with a perfect running 305 hoggin up floor space in his garage willing to give it away.
The problem is, locating said dude.

You'll gain nothing. Neither motor is great, so why trade one for the other.

Re: should i?

I would take that tired 307 and have the lower end rebuilt. When they do have it bored to 4 inch and it will be a fresh 327. Put some 64cc heads on it with a 650 holly and it will be a screamer. Make sure to have it balanced when you do it. I know there is a few more things to do like cam and the right iginition but I put one in my 57 short step I had and It ran like a champ. I had 3.08 gears in the back and in the right conditions (Me not having my foot in the carb) it was getting around 18MPG. I would hold on to that 307. It is a much better motor than that 305. Good Luck.

If you can't find another motor offer 200.00 and run it until you can build your 307.

Re: should i?

I may get flamed for this, but I'm willing to bet you can locate a good running 350 in a junk yard cheaper than the asking priceof that 305. It's up to you to prove how healthy it is...BEFORE buying it, but it can be done. And most yards can't tell a 305 from a 350, so you tell them it's a 305 and you might get it even cheaper... but that's not exacly honest. (but they'll stick it to you when they get a chance though)

Find a running 350 in a junkyard, tell the guys its a 267, and they'd almost pay you to take it away!

350 bucks could buy you a 307 rebuild kit from Northern Auto Parts with all Federal-Mogul stuff, plus whatever other tidbits you need for the motor. (you'll probably have 100 bucks or so left over)

Re: should i?

Why don't you put the truck on the backburner so you don't stave the motor up anymore than what it is, and ride in your F-150 until you can fix the 307. Just a thought.

Re: should i?

Police impounds... that's where I'm looking. For like the 73-87 trucks, preferrably before they went fuel injected so that way I don't have to deal with finding a carb intake and all that.

If you can find one of those trucks, you can get the 350 (pretty common) AND salvage parts off of the front disc brake and booster setup. THat's my plan, Stan.

I mean Dave.

I WOULDN'T INVEST SO MUCH AS A GASKET SET IN EITHER ONE OF THOSE POWERHOUSES. THEY ARE JUNK. INVEST THE SAME MONEY & LABOUR IN A 350 & YOU'LL HAVE TWICE THE MOTOR FOR THE SAME CASH & LABOUR OUTLAY. JUST THE .02 FROM A GUY WHO SAW THE INSIDE OF A MOTOR ONCE. JOHN

Re: should i?

Well, come to think of it, Classic trucks magazine did a buildup on a 307. It was an original motor from 1968, never been rebuilt. And with a higher lift cam, old-school Edelbrock intake, and a Q-Jet, it made 230+HP and 278lb. ft of torque. Pretty respectable for and original 38 year old engine. When they got done with the motor, they spent 5 grand or so and had 315hp and 330lb ft. WOW!
