Doors!

WELL!!!! I took a look tonight at the cherry door that I found at the pick/pull and it is the one with the dimple for the screw at the wing. My other door( from 69) is not that way............it is also in good shape. However the reason I have the dimpled oddball, is that I had to replace a rotted door and planned on using all the parts, like door latches glass , wing etc. from the old 69 door into the(I believe to be) 72 door. If I replace regulators will I have to get the one for the 72?? Can I make that door behave like a 69 if I weld a filler and delete the dimple???
What am I facing here with 2 different years/ styles of doors?? I plan on using the covers for the inside of the door from my 69 stuff. will this work????

HELP!!!!

Re: Doors!

A regulator from a 72 door is not going to work with the 69 panels. The 72 sticks out too far.
You need both regulators (window & door handle) from 67-71. You will also have to run the upper metal channels to hold the top of the door panels and install four thread inserts for the lower panel screws.

Re: Doors!

Are you asking if you can use all the insides of the 69 door on the 72 door, if so, the answer is yes. In other words, put every thing from the 69 door, regulators and all into the 72, Then you can still use your 69 door panels just fine. Then you will have only the cosmetic dimple to deal with and you can fill that in if you want.

Re: Doors!

Okay. See if I follow you on this. I will use all of my 69 stuff in the 72 door. Fill the dimple. I am making some weld in inserts for the 1\4-20nc screws (4 of em) that hold the bottom of the door panel. I have the upper trim strip from the 69 that I will use on the 72 door and the 69 panel also.
Sound about right?????

Re: Doors!

EVERYTHING WILL WORK JUST FINE. THE DOORS WITH THE SCREW DIMPLE ARE 72 DOORS & THE WINDOW REG.S HAVE ABOUT A 1/4 LONGER SHAFT TO CLEAR THE 72 PLASTIC DOOR PANELS. YOU CAN USE THOSE BUT THE SHAFT WILL BE I LITTLE LONGER WITH 67-71 DOOR PANALS . (I'VE DONE IT SEVERAL TIMES.) PEOPLE WOULD PROBABLY NOTICE ON A 100 POINT CONCOURSE RESTORATION, BUT FOR A DAILY DRIVER?? PROBABLY NO ONE WILL. AS FAR AS THE CAPTURED NUTS THAT HOLD THE DOOR PANAL ON (72s USED THOSE PLASTIC CHRISTMAS TREE TYPE RIVITS) YOU CAN JUST USE NUT-CERTS (THEY GO IN LIKE POP RIVETS) OR YOU CAN GO TO A GOOD LOCAL HARDWARE & GET COLAPSABLE NUTS THAT COLAPSE WHEN YOU TIGHTEN THEM DOWN. THEY'RE ABOUT .50 CENTS EACH. HERES A PIC. OF THEM. NAYBE IT WILL MAKE MORE SENCE. JOHN

Re: Doors!

Thanks Guys. Once again all is well with everything!! I didn't think it was any real big deal. So the 72s had a little thicker door panel at the window regulator shaft only??? Also, what is the dimple for and is there all of the same mounting features as a 69 for the wing????( will mine just bolt in)??

Re: Doors!

IN 1972 G.M. PUT A SCREW IN TO HOLD THE INNER & OUTER DOOR SKINS TOGETHER INSTEAD OF SPOT WELDING TWO LITTLE TABS TOGETHER TO ACOMPLISH THIS. THE WING VENTS ARE THE SAME FROM 67-72 WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DIFFERENT STYLES OF HANDLES IN 67-68 MODELS. IT'LL FIT JUST FINE. I HAD A 72 WIDOW REG. IN MY 71 BLAZER THAT I DROVE EVERY DAY FOR 11 YEARS & NOBODY EVER NOTICED OR AT LEAST MENTIONED THAT THE WINDOW CRANK STUCK OUT A 1/4 INCH TO FAR. HERES A PIC. OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. IF YOU CAN'T FIND ONE, I MAY HAVE AN EXTRA LAYING AROUND. JOHN

Re: Doors!

You also need to change the door regulator from your 69 door to the 72 door.

Re: Doors!

The window and door mechanisms need to match the inside door panels you are using, nothing really to do with the doors themselves. The 72 plastic inside panels are thicker and need longer shafts. 71 and older panels use the shorter shafts.

Re: Doors!

What I meant to say was that the door handle (inside only) shaft will be too long just like the window shaft. The outside door handle is the same - use whichever one looks best.

The inside handle - often called the regulator - is held in with 3 screws(phillips head). Handle it when you change the window mechanism. Remove the window - remove the door mech.- install the 69 door mech - install the 69 window mech - install the door upholstry - ENJOY.
