Re: U joint

They will clunk when you shift into gear usually. You can also grab it with your hand and twist it and see/feel movement.
I think it sounds like it’s your tires. Have you balanced them lately?

Re: U joint

I've had them cause vibes before they got to the point of clunking or feeling loose, but the only way to tell if they aren't obviously busted is to take them apart and look.

Was it only at a specific RPM range? Just wondering.

Re: U joint

If they are the same size, you can have them rotated too.

Does it seem to go away if you go faster than the speed that is starts to vibrate?

Re: U joint

any noise? sure it's not in your rear diff??

Mine has a hum that starts at about 45'ish and gets louder as speed increases.. new rear gears is on my list because of it..

Re: U joint

going to take it out on the interstate tomorrow and see if it stops after a certain speed and listen to see if it is whining(humming). did not vibrate, before changed trans, also had diffferent tires put on back. Don't think the guy balanced them. went from 235-70-15 to 275-60-15

Look over your drive shaft for any dents, fresh signs of abrasions that could possibly have removed a weight from you drive shaft. I doubt it's that, but look to make sure.
I still think its your tires - especially since you don’t think they balanced them.

The ones I just replaced would give me some vibes under a light (yet specific) load condition. Going over a certain speed would make it worse, but it was more related to load and MPH than RPM.

Re: U joint

it could be nothing, happened to me, i thought it was something with the drive shaft but the joints and the bearing are good so i balanced the tires, still there, the gears in the diff are fine and yet it still does it a bit, my brothers 05 f250 4x4 does it, my brother inlaws 95 nissan 4x4 does it, so it could just be something you didnt notice before and now for some reason you do, just like i did
