2 peice rims

what years are good to replace two piece rims? When did they start making them one piece? will the back spacing be the same?
I'm asking for my dad becuase he has two piece rims on his 76 3/4 suburban. I'd like to keep it original looking with gm rims, any help would be much appreicated.

My dad wants to but some aftermarket rims, but the money we would spend on thoughs rigth now, would be better spent on other areas of the truck.

Go to the bone yard and find some 16's off any 73-87's or any older Dodge. If worse comes to worse , you might have to use 16.5's. Get rid of those damn split rims, not worth the risk of losing your head over them. I suggest you chuck em in the forest.

ford or dodge wheels will fit a chevy but not the other way around. newer ford wheels won't work, they don't center off the lug nuts. they center off the hub and use flat lug nuts instead of tapered. another of ford's "better ideas",LOL .
unless you're running bigger tires, 16.5s are an expensive thing to find. 33s on up are still fairly common but smaller sizes are tough to get.
if you have a pick-n-pull type yard near you, 16s are common as water.

The thing to do is to measure the setback of what you are running. That's the distance from the back of the rim to the face the brake drum mates to. I use a framing square (it's the right length) and a tape measure. Put the square across the outer flange of the wheel without resting on the tire.

Next, go to the salvage yard. Tell them you're looking for an 8 bolt GM rim. I know they used the same rim at least into the mid 90's, I think they still have the same bolt pattern and center (or hub). It is important to get the proper hub size, that is where your shear load is transfered from the truck to the tire. 16" is the common size for the 3/4 ton wheels and the tires are easy to get.

16.5's dodge rims

I had the same problem and couldn't find 16 or 17's so I settled for 16.5's from a late 70's Dodge van with same bolt pattern. I figured anything was better than those split rims that came with the truck. A local tire dealer had an employee get killed in the 1980's trying to put a tire on one of them. In PA they are outlawed now. I got these dodge rims for 5 bucks a piece in my local yard as they rolled that van in the gates.

Anybody got any pics of the split rims, so I can avoid them. Not sure if I've ever seen them before
