Lightbulb Borg Warned T-56 6-speed

Does any body have any expeirences w/ them???

Do you think they would handle a BB car???

They are factory installed behind the viper V-10(488ft/lbs) so 'yes' they will live behind a big block but that doesn't mean they're indestructable.

Darn good transmissions. I don't know how Richmond sells those $3000 ROD 6-speeds when there's these for less than a third of that... I've seen specs on 'em such as 450lb/ft for 24 hours continuous...and they do install them behind the Viper, even in the new one with the bigger V10...

Input & output shaft dimensions are the diff between GM's & Vipers. The new viper engines for '03 are same size as last years just tuned to squeeze more power. If you consider all that's needed to change to a T-56 the Richmond is comparetively priced since it doesn't require as many mods to install if you are already running a muncie or T-10 in an older car + w/the Richmond you can choose the ratios that best suit your combo, not so w/T-56's.

Think one of those could be swapped in to one of our trucks? Is there anything strange about them that would make the swap difficult? That would be a sweet tranny to have!

They require a diff clutch set-up: hydraulic pull instead of manual push which requires a hydraulic clutch mstr.cylinder & a certain flywheel + the usual yoke, driveshaft length adj's, & floorpan mods if necessary. Have you priced a good clutch for a late model lately...OUCH. Still would be a cool swap, just more work than the Richmond.

I've seen LT1s and T56's on eBay for under $2000 all the time. There doesn't seem to be many right now...getting one from a wrecked F-body is probably the best way to go. And why not take the LT1 too?

The clutches aren't that bad, really; stick with the GM ones, like the hybrid LT1/4 clutch we've got in our '94 Z28. One of the better ones you can get and also one of the cheaper ones.

If you search and are patient, you can get a decent one for a grand or so. Make sure it's from an LT1, LS1 trannies won't bolt up. Getting the matching engine IS the way to go, then the LS1 is viable. That's my plan in the next 2 years or so.

there is also what is called (the aftermarket T-56) which has a manual speedometer output ,rather then the electric from the production T-56. Lake wood makes a bellhousing for the t-56 that will allow you to use a standard clutch and flywheel and even a mechanical clutch release if you desire. I got my T-56 for $800 out of autotrader and I got the flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, and hyd. slave cylinder.

also, If you have a monster big block you can have the viper mainshaft put in the production GM t-56's which bring them up to the 500ft# production rating.
