good idea or bad idea??

took my front clip off my truck since i had to replace the pillars on the bottoms... and since we are painting the truck it was a good idea to have it all off anyway..dad was saying to lower the cost of paint... sand and prime and paint the hood, fenders, and cowl then set them in my bedroom... is this a good idea or not.. dad thinks its good but my friend that went to school for autobody said bad idea because he said the paint wont match up.... will it or will it not????

Very likely the paint won't match up, unless you are using the same batch on everything. Even if you have another can mixed with the proper paint code, there are still small variations in it.

he said temperature will play a big role in it....so good idea is to prime the front clip and the metal the front clip covers up and stick it back on then paint everything at once?? bed im going to have to deal with later i want the cab and front clip done before i worry about the bed because its got some issues

You shouldn't have any issues if you buy plenty of paint from the get-go. At which point it won't matter "when" you paint the parts because you'll be spraying from the same batch. I don't think you'll save any $$$ on the paint, but it is always a good idea to paint a vehicle as disassembled as possible. This allows you to get inside, behind, and under areas that would normally be covered or otherwise inaccessible. This is especially important if you are going to all the trouble of repairing some rust issues. Don't forget that a paint's primary function is to provide protection from the elements......yeah it's smooth and shiny, but that is to prevent "stuff" like water, salt and various other oxidizers from sticking to the surface and working it's way to the base metals.

i know im going to spend the $$ in paint..dads just thinking get hoods and fender and cowl painted then do cab another time because it all wont hit our pocket book at once... im 17 years old going to be 18 next month... and all the money he has spent on the truck hes spent about 100 i spent all the rust.. i plan to repay him back so i can say this is my investment

I painted my truck piece by piece over a year and a half. Very slight variations in shade, but not enough to notice. I had my paint mixed all at once though.

Painting it all at once is best, but can be done in pieces if you do choose. Biggest problem is not scratching it when you put it back together.
