'77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled" - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So I thought I’d jump on board and put together a little build thread of my own. She’s know as "The Sled” over on DuallyScene, so I decided to roll with it.

Here’s how she looked as-purchased:

Here’s the Western Chassis 6/8 drop going on:

Here she sits after it was all said and done:

The seats were straight nasty. I took them over to my buddies shop and he hooked me up:

I started out pretty hot and heavy at first. Rebuild the brake system, rebuilt the front end, had the entire A/C system repaired, etc. Lots of little stuff that didn’t warrant any pics. That was all right before the bottom dropped out of the real estate marked in SoCal. Realizing it was quickly becoming the right time to buy, we put the brakes on the Sled to start saving up for a house.

Fast forward a bit...

We bought our first house and got settled in and stabilized financially, so now I’m going to start making some more forward progress on the Sled.

I picked up a parts truck:

I’ve been eyeballin’ this sucker for over 6 months. It had been sitting at a body shop down the street from our yard at work. He was trying to part it out. I stopped by about 4 months ago and he said he wanted $350 for the whole thing. I swung by yesterday and offered him 2 bills and he took it. So I called up the hook and had it dropped at my pad. I think he was just stoked to get it outta his place.

It had been picked over since the last time I saw it, but it has all the parts I really care about. It’s remarkably straight for as haggard as it looks.

I’m going to swap over the bed, doors and front end. I know a guy who is going to hook me up with his ’88 grill (I love the 85-88 grills) and headlight bezels, so they will find their way onto the Sled as well. The plan for now is to shoot it Indigo Blue and tint the windows. That way, it’ll look good on the outside, and I’ll swap out to an 81-91 interior when I can get to it.

The plan is to make it a nice cruiser. I'm still looking for a 3+3 K30 dually to lift, so this one will be more "hot rod" than work truck.

So, there you have it...another dually build.

Sweet, this should be nice! I love the looks of a slammed dually.... even more so if it can still work like it was meant to. I'm a blue color lover too, so I can't wait to see it wearing it's new color.

I like the two tone scheme, not particularly those colors. You said you were just changing it on this one. The next one you can leave two tone!

So I got a little motivated this past weekend and decided to swap beds. I was really having a hard time trying to get these newfangled, California gas pump nozzles to work with the old-school filler assembly. A 30-minute fill up on Fridays commute home sealed the deal. I needed to swap over to the newer style before I went Postal the next time I tried to fill up.

Pulled off the old bed as soon as I got home:

Pulled/pushed the donor into the operating room -or- why every guy needs a tractor:

It was just me and my scrawny buddy, Shaun (pictured above, doing what he does best: nothing

), so even with the loader, there was no way to manually lift off the donor bed without risking some severe damage. I was trying to figure out a safe way to remove the bed when I had this epiphany-

The Wife.

At this point, I was scoping out the lighting harness on the bed and I decided to swap it out for my old harness. The donor bed's harness was pretty well hacked and I didn't trust it. I also bought some fuel fill 90's from Napa and got the fuel fill assemblies hooked up and ready to go.

After some deliberation on the best way to do it, I used a come-along to slowly lower the bed down onto the truck.

Got it all bolted down, hooked the lights up, and installed the lenses and I’m back on the road. Filled up the left tank in less than 5 minutes this morning. I was a happy camper.

Now I just have to degrease my driveway from all the pressure washing. *DOH*

No forks. We had a set years ago, but we got rid of them when we closed the business.

Me too. I really went back and forth about it for a while, but eventually, I caved into my OCD.

Which is to say, I really wanted the dually to appear to be the same generation as my Suburban.

Although, I have equal amounts of love for both front clips.

As far as the paint colors go, I’m going to stick with a factory color scheme:

My Dad had the exact same rig years back. Always liked the colors.
