Re: Died at an intersection, DOH!

After today don't waste another dime on the coil/points system. An HEI is so cheap compared to the improved starting and running that you will obtain. I did it on my 67 with the 292 and it was crazy how much better it ran, and how much easier it starts.

Re: Died at an intersection, DOH!

you might want to install a new point set anyways. its pretty simple. they make them with the condensor already attached.

Re: Died at an intersection, DOH!

I'll definitely change the points soon if I don't manage to find an HEI somewhere for the gmc v6 305(google didn't find anything so far...).

I'm really hedging on keeping this engine as I like taking road trips and all and the lack of parts availability has me worried it's going to strand me somewhere.

Re: Died at an intersection, DOH!

Not postive on this but look at the 229 v-6 in the 81-82 monte carlo. Its the same as a v-8 but made for a v-6. ITs actually a 305 with 2 cylinders chopped off. 4.3 may work as well just not sure you could find one thats not computer controlled.

Re: Died at an intersection, DOH!

Did a little research, apparently there isn't an HEI for the 305 V6, but a Pertronix kit will probably work.
edit: Pertronix part# 1164

Re: Died at an intersection, DOH!

Have you ever thought about adding an ign control box like a msd. I put one on my 72 and 85.
I haven't had any problems yet. They have been on there for 3yrs now.

Re: Died at an intersection, DOH!

I'll check out the MSD box, there is now a nice made in America HEI distributor on ebay for the 305 v6...only problem is it is over $200.00..wow, that's a big chunk of change for me(especially with the motor having a slight knock I'm still trying to chase down).

I changed the points today, and the oil and filter, truck is starting up right away with the new coil..running much better than before, absent the slight knock and I'd be doing cartwheels. Going to try and pull the pan and check the screen (and hammer out the big dents I put in the pan). Started putting in new window felt too.
